The Song of the Lark, Part V

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

Dr. Archie has agreed to come to New York and lend Thea the money she needs to get to Germany.  The chapter begins with Thea telling Fred that he is on his way and should arrive that Friday.  Thea and Fred get into a lengthy discussion about borrowing the money from Dr. Archie.  Fred leaves her room and quite upset about the conversation and the fact that she won't take the money from him.  (HG)

Chapter 3

The Kronborg family is different with Thea gone. After Mr. Kronborg's death, Dr. Archie tends to Mrs. Kronborg's sickness, and realizes that Mrs. Kronborg misses her daughter. He writes a letter to Thea, explaining this, and asks if she could visit home for awhile so her mother could see her. Thea's reply states that if she left the opera, she wouldn't be able to get the big part, although she did want to see her mother. She asks her mother to wait for six months for her return. Mrs. Kornborg admits that Thea is her favorite out of her children and recalls many memories with the doctor on raising Thea. Dr. Archie later returns to Moonstone for Mrs. Kronborg's funneral.

Chapter 4

Thea, Dr. Archie, and Fred all go out to dinner in New York. Dr. Archie and Thea get a little nostalgic, and then talk about the people she had known back in Moonstone. Fred and Dr. Archie talk about the differences between places like Moonstone and New York and about Spanish Johnny. The chapter ends with both men observing Thea and noting certain admirable aspects about her, as well as things that had changed in her. [SM]

Chapter 5

Thea says her goodbyes to the Harsinyi's, Fred, and Dr. Archie before boarding a ship for Germany. She reflected back on her life in Moonstone, and especially thought of Ray Kennedy. She woke in the morning rejuvenated in her dream of becoming a singer. (D.W.)
