My Name Is Asher Lev, Book Two
Chapter 6
Asher misses his father and notices all the stress that is on his mother because of the work she is doing on Russia. Rivkeh buys him oil paints from Yudel Krinsky. He starts painting and drawing all the time, ignores his studies, and says that he doesn't care what his mother says to his father in regards to how he is doing in school. Asher is talked to and scolded by his mashpia and talked to by his uncle Yitzchok, his mother, and Yudel Krinsky about what he should be doing rather than art. He goes with his mother to the Parkway Museum and shows her the nudes and the crucifixions, she tells him about Jesus once they are outside, not in the museum. Asher's father comes home for Passover and is outraged to know that his son is interested in drawing the nudes and crusifixions and he blames Rivkeh for supporting him.
